فَمَا تَقُولُ فِي المُحْدَثِينَ منْ الشُّعَراءِ والمُتَقَدِّمينَ مِنهُمْ؟ قالَ: المُتَقَدِّمونَ أَشْرفُ لَفْظًا، وَأَكثرُ منْ المَعَاني حَظًا، وَالمُتَأَخِّرونَ أَلْطَفُ صُنْعًا، وَأَرَقُّ نَسْجًا،
